Queer Black feminist scholar Rachel Afi Quinn is one of the co-founders of South Asian Youth in Houston Unite (SAYHU), a transnational feminist social justice collective based in Houston, Texas. SAYHU’s process of coalition building across difference is an effort to apply Black feminist theory and South Asian feminist methodologies to community building in greater Houston. Dr. Quinn will talk about SAYHU’s approach to building an inclusive social justice-oriented community, and some of the challenges we have faced as we teaching about feminism, colorism, anti-blackness, and solidarities in the South. SAYHU has established an annual summer institute and digital humanities archival and oral history project and a series of public events where we foster peer mentorship relationships and opportunities for skill-building among South Asian youth, particularly first generation South Asian Texans. The Feminist Lecture Series is part of the Women’s and Gender Studies Department’s Gender Studies Program Series and is made possible by funding from the SSU Instructionally Related Activities Program.
