Sleep Better, DO Better

Over the years our nightly routine has transitioned from stuffed animals and bedtime stories to scrolling through Instagram before shutting our eyes. From an early age we have been told that getting 8 hours of sleep is recommended for lots of reasons, but do we know why it is SO important to prioritize sleep in college? Let’s learn more!

So, What’s So Great About Sleep?

Positive Changes In Behavior

People are less irritable when they have had a good night’s rest and are less likely to make poor decisions. Sleep = a healthy brain!

Great For Your Health

Did you know it is said that when a person is getting enough sleep they are less likely to develop diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure?

Improve Your Memory

How Can YOU Prioritize Sleep?

Temperature Tells A Lot

Studies have shown that keeping your room temperature between 60 and 67 degrees fahrenheit can help aid your body to cool down faster before sleeping. Finding that perfect climate can really make all the difference in the quality of sleep you have!

Rethink Blue Light Before Bed

We’re all guilty of scrolling on TikTok before bed for some much needed relaxation and laughs. Unfortunately, the blue light from your cell phone is proven to keep your brain more alert, making it hard to fall asleep and have a good night’s rest. Instead of being on your phone before bed, try reading a book or listening to a podcast.

Consider Your Late Night Snacking Habits

What you eat before bed actually has a lot to do with your quality of sleep. The most obvious thing to avoid before bed is caffeine, which should be consumed no less than 5 hours prior to your hopeful sleep time. As far as snacking is concerned, try to eat nuts, fruit, or drink some tea instead of going straight for the Cheez-Its. Our bodies have a harder time breaking down processed foods before bed.
