Robust empirical evidence shows that mindfulness meditation can help alleviate the harmful effects of stress, support emotional balance, and enhance well-being. In this class, students will:
Learn about the science of mindfulness meditation.
Understand the wellness benefits that are associated with it.
Become proficient in practicing it for themselves.
The class mixes experiential exercises with short lectures and reading.
This course is specially designed to help students cope with the added stress of returning to college during an ongoing pandemic. Students will learn skills to manage this stress proactively. After taking this course, students will have learned how to improve their abilities to:
Concentrate
Bounce back from emotional difficulties.
Become more compassionate towards themselves and others.
Instructor: Dr. Andrew Wallace Dr. Wallace is a professor in the department of philosophy at SSU, where he has taught since 1998. Dr. Wallace is a certified compassion cultivation training teacher (CCT), a path-breaking program that psychologists and contemplative scholars at Stanford University developed. Dr. Wallace teaches CCT through the School of Extended and International Education. He has studied and practiced mindfulness meditation for over twenty years and is completing an advanced training program on the science and practice of teaching mindfulness through the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. In addition, Dr. Wallace writes and teaches on ethics, contemplative studies, mindfulness-based practices, compassion, and altruism.
