At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Tommie Smith and his teammate John Carlos came in first and third, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. As they received their medals, each man raised a black-gloved fist, performing an iconic act that captured/s the tensions between race, politics, social justice, and sports. Smith's post-Olympic years were marked by racial insults, death threats, FBI scrutiny as he sought work as a track coach, and finally, a reframing of his legacy. Please join us when Dr. Tommie Smith shares his story about that moment on the podium, what brought him there, and where it led him. For more information on this event, contact Mo.phillips@sonoma.edu
