Tribal Eco-Cultural Stewardship in California

  • Schulz 3001 1801 E Cotati Ave Rohnert Park, CA, 94928 United States (map)

A public lecture by Dr. Peter Nelson (Environmental Science, Policy & Management/Ethnic Studies, UC Berkeley)

Native American peoples of California have stewarded their respective traditional territories since time immemorial. These stewardship practices were disrupted by various iterations and manifestations of settler colonialism in the past two centuries. These impositions on the world have also accelerated climate change and cultural and environmental impacts, such as the increasing number and severity of wildfires in California in the past two decades. In this talk, Dr. Peter Nelson will discuss some of the ways Tribes, universities, and agencies are addressing these impacts using multidisciplinary, anthropological and ecological approaches to steward culturally significant places.
