Dr Favilla, who is a Postdoctoral Researcher at UC Sata Cruz & NIPR, is broadly interested in how diving marine mammals are adapted to the marine environment and how they might be affected by anthropogenic disturbances and environmental change. Her research focuses on the diving behavior and ecophysiology of northern elephant seals. They are one of the most extreme divers among pinnipeds and the breeding colony at Año Nuevo provides a perfect field site. This work excites her because she is able to combine her love of fieldwork and childhood curiosity of marine fauna with her engineering background to study freely diving marine mammals using biologging techniques.
