How to Find A Compatible College Roommate

I think it's safe to say that we have all heard at least one roommate horror story, and that story has stuck with us until now. So, how do you find a roommate who will be compatible with you and a potential lifetime friend? Keep reading.

1. Pick your own roommate, even if you don't know them very well.

You can either go random with roommates or you can choose your roommate. I highly suggest choosing a roommate to avoid any incompatible situations. While you can't guarantee you will get along with your roommate, you can at least increase the chances by having a say in who you live with for a year!

2. Join Facebook Class Group Pages.

This depends on how the majority of people find roommates at the school. At Sonoma State, joining the Facebook group for your graduating class is the #1 way that students find their roommates here. I found my roommate on my class page and I have lived with her ever since - not to mention she is my best friend. The funny thing is, finding a roommate is similar to online dating. You will be chatting and making small talks with many different people and trying to find the things you have in common. Tell them what you love to do and what you don't like so much. Be yourself and make sure you're talking about thing that can give you a feel if this person would be a good match or not as your potential roommate.

3. Meet in person, if you can.

The best way to ensure that you will be compatible with your future roomie is to plan a meet-up before school starts. This is the best way to communicate and get to know each other!

4. Communicate effectively.

Avoid awkward conversations down the line by being open from day one and discussing boundaries, habits, and schedules. During your time as roommates, whether you become best friends or not, communication will be so necessary. No relationship can be perfect, but it can come close to it with open and calm conversation! Always remember to discuss these things in person and not over text messages.
