The Fall Virtual Career Fair is just days away! The fair is a great way to put yourself out there to employers and organizations that are looking to hire interns, employees, and volunteers. We want to make sure that you have all the tools to be successful and show off the best version of yourself!
Know Who Will Be There
Researching employers and organizations that will be at the fair is a great idea. Here is the best way to gather information:
Log on to Handshake
Click the events tab
Navigate to “Sonoma State Fall Virtual Career Fair
Scroll to the bottom of the page to see who’s attending
2. Be Sure Your Tech Is In Check
A fully charged laptop and headphones are a step toward success when attending the virtual career fair. Tip: Have your laptop plugged in while you’re at the fair to ensure that you will never have a low battery!
3. Find a Quiet Space with a Neutral Background
It can be hard to focus with roommates walking by, dogs barking, or TV sets on. Try to find a quiet space to focus on the conversations that you will have. Also, try to find a blank wall or neutral colored curtains; this will put the spotlight on you with no distractions.
4. Be Aware of Your Body Language
Maintaining eye contact, checking your posture, and speaking clearly are all good signs to a future employer that you are engaged and interested in what they have to say.
5. Dress to Impress
It is important to wear professional business attire to the virtual career fair, at least from the waist up… Button down shirts, ties, blouses, and blazers are all great options for your Zoom debut!
6. Utilize the Chat
Many employers utilize the chat feature of Zoom to interact. Be sure to write professionally and effectively when you are chatting back and forth. Avoid slang and keep it professional!
7. Practice Your Elevator Pitch
First impressions are everything! An elevator pitch is what you tell an employer right off the bat. Your pitch should showcase your skills, experience, and most importantly your personality.
8. Take Notes
It’s smart to have a pen and paper nearby to jot down contact information or take notes.
9. Listen and Ask Questions
Employers and organizations have so much information that they’d like to share. For the best experience, actively listen to what they have to say and if you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask.
10. Relax & Be YOU
Take a deep breath and relax! At the end of the day, employers are just trying to get to know you.
The Fall Virtual Career Fair is on November 10th from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Be sure to register with Handshake before the event.
