Network Like A Pro!

Every mentor, career center advisor, and professor will tell you that it is important to network in order to be successful in your future career. But how exactly do you “build your network”? What even is a network? Read below for the answers to these questions and some valuable information on how to make connections that could lead to jobs, internships, or strong professional relationships.

What Is A Network?

A network is a culmination of relationships or connections you have made that have aided in either teaching you something new or helping you to achieve a goal. Building these connections can help set YOU up for success. The more people you know, the more opportunities will come your way!

Pro Tip: Make a profile on Handshake and attach your resume for employers to view.

Seek A Mentor

A great way to build your network is by seeking out a mentor! Lucky for you, Sonoma State has a new program that aims to do just that. Simply join the “Sonoma State Network” and meet alumni who have either studied the same major as you, or are working at a company you are interested in. This program has made it easier than ever to build those connections from the comfort of your own home!

Don’t Be Afraid To Reach Out

Another great way to build your network is by reaching out to professionals at a company that sparks your interest. You might be asking yourself “What do I say to someone on LinkedIn or Handshake”? This question (and more) can be answered with a simple appointment to the Career Center. Use LoboConnect to find a time and day that works best for your schedule and book your session with a career advisor.

Put Yourself Out There

You never know where a connection might lead! Put yourself out there and make your name known, even if that is at your local coffee shop. Never underestimate the relationships you are building because who knows, that coffee shop employee could know the CEO of a major company!

Always present yourself in the best light and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. You won’t regret making these connections when you are the next CEO or President of a company!
