STAR ARTICLE: Seawolves Reveal Hidden Gems on Campus

Written by Marc Duran, Staff Writer from the Sonoma State Star

Sonoma State University has a broad selection of gorgeous sites and unknown spots that make campus life truly excellent, although many new/transfer students may be unaware of it. Whether you’re searching for a quiet place to study, a bustling center for socializing, or a beautiful setting to take in the scenery, the campus is full of hidden treasures that improve the student experience and make university life as enriching outside of the classroom as it is inside, from peaceful lakes to cultural centers.

One of the first places many students may not know about is the tranquil lakes, a must-see for anyone living on campus. Close to the student housing, it’s a magnificent spot for unwinding, having a picnic, or simply soaking in the beautiful surroundings. The peaceful sound of the water and the sight of ducks splashing around the surface make this a popular hangout for students looking to unwind or take a break from their studies. Whether you want to read, meditate, or just hang out with friends, the lakes offer a serene setting that relieves the stress of college life.

Lobos is the go-to place for students wanting to get a bite to eat and hang out with friends on campus at Sonoma State. Lobos, well-known for its easygoing atmosphere, serves a wide selection of comfort food choices, such as pizza, burgers, and vegetarian options. Enormous screens that frequently show live events or sporting events are paired with comfortable seats in what is intended to be a social hub. When speaking to Samuel Vega, a third-year transfer studying business, didn’t know Lobo existed. “I’ve been at Sonoma State for a bit now, and I didn’t know they had a spot so unique. It’s a bit hidden, but it’s a great spot to eat some food, have some drinks with friends, and they even have a pool table anyone can use.” Lobos is a mainstay of SSU’s dining scene, providing both convenience and interaction, whether you’re in the mood for a full meal or just playing pool.

For those seeking a quieter, more introspective space, the Meditation Room in the Student Center offers a peaceful retreat. This space, available to all students, is intended to promote mindfulness and meditation while providing a necessary diversion from the hectic pace of college life. The room’s peaceful atmosphere encourages students to unwind, rejuvenate, and discover peace amidst their busy schedules, whether they are using it for prayer, meditation, or just a few quiet moments. Pedro Gurrola, a fourth-year majoring in communications, enjoys spending time there. “It’s such a low-key spot for people to clear their minds, whether it’s about school or life. It helps to have a safe space to study or even think.” It’s a great tool for mental and emotional health, encouraging reflection and self-care in a campus community that is encouraging.

These combined places offer a wealth of exploration, leisure, and communication options, making these spots valuable knowledge to all students here at Sonoma State.
